Dear John,
I have to be honest with you, it’s been a pretty turbulent
week at the People’s Vote campaign.
In case you don’t know, last Sunday, the board of the
campaign decided to change the senior executive team. They did this
because they believed the campaign needed a different direction for a
likely General Election. That election was called on Tuesday and will
take place on December 12th.
Many people in the campaign team felt very loyal to the
senior figures who were leaving and walked out in solidarity with
them. A lot of the team stayed and are continuing to
crack on with our plans for this General Election.
Divisions like this are best resolved in private in a
collegiate, calm, and professional manner. The only other thing I have
to say on this matter is that I really hope the rest of the team who
aren’t at work decide to come back as soon as possible. I understand
their reasons to leave - personnel changes are always going to be
controversial - but, as of today, there are 41 days left before the
election. And we must be absolutely focused on this
election.
Every election, parties tell us: “this is the most important
election of your lifetime!” Most of the time this is nonsense.
But not this time.
In all of my 22 years of working in politics, this is
by far the most country-defining election I’ve ever worked
on.
There are two possible outcomes. Either Boris Johnson will
win a majority, or he won’t. If he does, Parliament will quickly vote
through his Brexit deal or even worse, let us crash out with No Deal
in January.
However, if Boris Johnson doesn’t win a majority, there will
almost certainly be a majority for a People’s Vote.
This is because of all the other major parties (Labour, Liberal
Democrats, SNP, Greens, Plaid) support one.
So we have 41 days before the future of this
country is decided. 41 days before we elect a
Parliament that votes for a terrible Brexit deal and 10 more years
where we discuss nothing but Brexit. Or 41 days
before we elect a People’s Vote Parliament that gives us the chance to
have the final say on Brexit.
The bookies think it’s a coin toss. They say there’s a 51%
chance of Boris Johnson getting a majority, and a 49% chance of him
not getting one. It’s all to play for.
How can we help elect a People’s Vote
Parliament?
The objective of our campaign in this election is to get
as many people as possible to use their vote tactically in the
key, marginal constituencies.
Our friends at Best For Britain have done some great
modelling and polling of this election. It shows that if nobody in our
movement votes tactically, Boris Johnson is currently set to win a big
majority.
However, if just 40% of Remainers vote tactically, we
can defeat him.
In places like St Albans, a Lib Dem-Tory marginal, we need
everyone to support the Lib Dems. In places like Chingford and
Woodford Green, a Labour-Tory marginal, we need everyone to support
Labour.
We will always back the candidate in each seat who is
best-placed to beat Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage’s
candidates.
All of us in this movement for a People's Vote need to
be focused on this one objective of getting people to
tactically vote in the key constituencies.
So, what are we at the People’s Vote campaign
doing?
- We’re going to be launching our tactical voting
website early next week. We’re just crossing the t’s and
dotting the i’s to make sure we give the best, data-driven
recommendations around. You can find it on our tactical voting website. Sign up and get all your friends and family to
as well, particularly those who live in marginal seats!
- We’re going to be asking you to campaign for candidates
who we need to win. This Sunday morning, we're asking
activists who can make it to come to Uxbridge to campaign to unseat
Boris Johnson. In the afternoon, we're asking people to defend Dominic
Grieve in Beaconsfield. If you can make the Uxbridge session, please click here. If you can make the
Beaconsfield one, sign
up here.
- We’re going to be crowdfunding as much money as
possible, and then immediately donating it to
pro-People's Vote candidates in the key marginal
seats. A Many of them at the moment can't even afford
basic things like posting their campaign literature to their
voters. So please chip in what
you can here.
One of the few silver linings of Brexit is that people,
especially young people, are more engaged that ever in politics in the
UK. Together, we have mobilised a million people to take to
the streets - twice. Our relentless canvassing and street
stalls in every corner of the country have helped the UK change its
mind on Brexit. We’ve persuaded hundreds of MPs to support a People’s
Vote, making it the policy of every party in Parliament aside from the
Tories and the DUP.
Together, we can make a massive difference
in this General Election.
We can defeat Boris Johnson.
We can elect a People’s Vote
Parliament.
But we can only do it if hundreds of thousands of us take
effective action and are relentlessly focussed on our
objective of getting people to tactically vote in the key
marginal constituencies.
We need peoples like you to get involved in any way you can.
If we have the right recommendations, knock on the right doors, phone
the right people, tweet the right message, and chip in what we can -
we will win this.
From,
Patrick Heneghan OBE,
CEO of the People's Vote
P.S. Forward this email to any friends you have who support
our cause. And ask them to sign up to our mailing list. We need as
many people as possible to get involved in this election!
