Dear John,

We have £11,000 left to raise in this year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge. Can you help ensure our project supporting young women in Ethiopia goes ahead?

Frehiwot’s journey to independence

Frehiwot (pictured above) is a creative and independent woman living in Addis Ababa. But things haven’t been easy for her. As a single woman with limited access to education and employment, she depended on her brothers for accommodation, and covering basic needs was a struggle.

A friend told her about skills training offered by Womankind partners the Center for Accelerated Women's Economic Empowerment (CAWEE). She attended a two-month course on leather sewing and now is in full-time employment making leather bags.
“It is not something to take lightly to be able to live independently.
I don't live in luxury, but at least I'm not dependent on anyone.
I’m happy and confident now.”

Not only did skills training bring Frehiwot the security of an income, but it also connected her with other women.

“The training has opened doors for me, and I have learned to connect with people and made friends.”

Every woman should be able to live however she chooses. To start a family or not. To provide for herself without having to rely on a male relative. A lot of these freedoms come down to a woman’s ability to earn an independent income. But often a lack of access to education and skills training stands in their way.

Our goal for this year's Big Give Christmas Challenge

This week we’re aiming to fully fund a project with partners CAWEE which would economically empower 25 marginalised young women in Ethiopia through skills training and work placements. Not only will this boost their confidence it will also increase their status in the community.

Women from marginalised groups, such as women with disabilities and survivors of sexual violence, experience unemployment at even higher levels and will be actively invited to take part in this project.

Make a donation today and you can be safe in the knowledge that your gift will go twice as far with match funding. Ends Tuesday at midday!
