John,
Federal judges have an immense amount of work to get through every year, which means they turn to their clerks to do the bulk of the research and even draft opinions. This means that clerks — who aren’t elected — have an incredible influence on the court system.
That’s why it’s a problem for two federal judges to hire the same clerk who has a history of racism. The clerk in question sent her coworkers a hateful text, “I HATE BLACK PEOPLE...I hate blacks. End of story.”
Judges are supposed to be treating everyone equally, but they can’t do that if they’re influenced by racist clerks. That’s why I’ve called for an investigation into why the judges would hire someone with a racist history.
