The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs

Dear John,

A paper in the November issue of Health Affairs examines some of the impacts of private equity acquisition on hospitals.
Private Equity Acquisition Of Hospitals
In a November paper focused on the business of health, Marcelo Cerullo and coauthors investigated changes in service-line provision in private equity–acquired hospitals.

They determined that private equity acquisition of hospitals is associated with a higher probability of adding profitable hospital-based services, profitable technologies, and freestanding or satellite emergency departments.

“The results show a relationship between private equity acquisition and systematic changes in the central activity of hospitals: providing care,” the authors wrote.

They also found, “Private equity-acquired hospitals were less likely to add or continue services that have unreliable revenue streams or that may face competition from nonprofit hospitals.”

Today on Health Affairs Blog, Rosanna Tarricone and James Robinson argue that the US can draw lessons from Europe about health technology assessment.
