The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs

Dear John,

A paper in the November issue of Health Affairs examines some of the
impacts of private equity acquisition on hospitals.

Private Equity Acquisition Of Hospitals

In a November paper focused on the business of health, Marcelo Cerullo
and coauthors investigated changes in service-line provision

in private equity-acquired hospitals.

They determined that private equity acquisition of hospitals is
associated with a higher probability of adding profitable hospital-based
services, profitable technologies, and freestanding or satellite
emergency departments.

"The results show a relationship between private equity acquisition
and systematic changes in the central activity of hospitals: providing
care," the authors wrote.

They also found, "Private equity-acquired hospitals were less likely
to add or continue services that have unreliable revenue streams or that
may face competition from nonprofit hospitals."
