The government is once again facing the prospect of a shutdown at midnight on Friday December 3. To stave off a shutdown for a few more weeks or months, Congress is once again resorting to a CR (continuing resolution).
The immediate problem is, that Dem leadership is debating adding unrelated policy riders to the CR, such as
- PAYGO Waivers—To stave off medicare cuts being induced by Democrats overspending in February of 2021. In a $1.9 trillion spending bill, Pelosi and Schumer prioritized their liberal agenda over long-established government programs. Now they’re in a pickle, and they want Republicans to bail them out. (For the moment, it looks like conservatives are winning on this issue, but it is destined to become a fight again in the near future).
- Funding for Unaccompanied Children—But voting for additional funding to process and settle unaccompanied minors (for DHS and HHS respectively) is a vote to worsen Biden’s ongoing border crisis.
- More Afghan Refugee Money (without protections for the American people)—Allocating additional money towards the resettlement of Afghan refugees on top of the $6.3 billion Congress spent in September, without adding any stringent vetting requirements for those in the program, is misguided at best and dangerous at worst.
There’s a lot going on with this CR, and so we decided to tackle it for a special episode of our new podcast, On Air with Heritage Action.
