Race + Power Weekly

This week’s Race + Power newsletter takes an expansive look at the flaws in our justice system, as well as opportunities for progress. First, we examine the history and harmful effects of long-held racial stereotypes often used to explain away the disproportionate representation of Black people among the justice-involved population. Next, we expose the cooperation between elected officials and the private prison owners who donate to their campaigns in exchange for anti-immigrant legislative leanings. A third article considers the tactics of the private prison industry, and their use of power and strategy to weather changing political landscapes. Finally, we provide a glimmer of hope, highlighting the cooperatives offering sustainable solutions for the employment of people released from the carceral system.
