To me, the labor movement was never just a way of getting higher
wages. What appealed to me was the spiritual side of a great cause
that created fellowship. You wanted the girl or the man who worked
beside you to be treated just as well as you were, and an injury to
one was the concern of all.
-- Rose Schneiderman
Comrades,
Even with holiday breaks, other end-of-year events, work,
coursework, and finals, your comrades are doing so much to build class
consciousness and power in the East Bay. Just look at the next two
weeks of awesome and invaluable chapter events (conveniently printed
below) that we're juggling with department white elephants and way too
much vegan baking:
We have thought-provoking political education events, like the 75th
anniversary of the Oakland General Strike
(https://www.eastbaydsa.org/events/2050/2021-12-03-we-called-it-a-work-holiday-the-1946-oakland-general-strike/)
and Socialist Night School on the capitalist state
(https://www.eastbaydsa.org/events/2036/2021-12-07-socialist-night-school-the-capitalist-state/)
; events that are great for new members, like the "How to Win the
Holidays" training and social
(https://www.eastbaydsa.org/events/2053/2021-12-05-how-to-win-the-holidays-training-and-social/)
(or any other event you see with a 🌹rose emoji); and campaign and
committee meetings, including the kickoff of our 2022 electoral field
program
(https://www.eastbaydsa.org/events/2056/2021-12-07-2022-electoral-field-team-launch/)
.
We also really want to highlight the solidarity rally with ATU 192
this Saturday
(https://www.eastbaydsa.org/events/2048/2021-12-04-december-4th-rally-to-demand-hazard-pay-for-frontline-transit-workers/)
, bringing the months-long campaign for transit worker hazard pay to
Oakland City Hall. And finally, the "How to Build a Tenant Union"
workshop
(https://www.eastbaydsa.org/events/2057/2021-12-14-how-to-build-a-tenant-union/)
, rescheduled from Dec. 1 to Dec. 14: now is exactly the right time to
think about organizing your building, and this workshop is the perfect
place to learn how.
Solidarity!

** DEMANDING HAZARD PAY, TRANSIT WORKERS FORCE AC TRANSIT TO
THE NEGOTIATING
TABLE
------------------------------------------------------------
All
across California, frontline workers have demanded and won hazard pay
during the pandemic, especially in grocery, retail and healthcare
workplaces. Transit workers in the Bay Area, though, have not received
one penny of extra compensation for continuing to work in
life-threatening conditions. On July 28, over 40 AC Transit workers
and riders spoke up at the AC Transit board meeting to demand transit
workers be paid retroactive hazard pay.

** 🌹"WE CALLED IT A WORK HOLIDAY": THE 1946 OAKLAND GENERAL
STRIKE
------------------------------------------------------------
Friday,
December 3 | 7–10 p.m.
East Bay Community Space 507 55th St,
Oakland ♿️
Celebrate the 75th anniversary of the most recent
city-wide general strike in American history! Nearly the entire
working class of Oakland withheld their labor December 3 - 5, 1946, in
support of striking women in downtown department stores, and in
protest of police brutality on picket lines. The Oakland General
Strike was the sixth and last city-wide general strike in the year
after the end of World War II. What were its root causes? How was it
organized? How did it turn out? Could something like it happen
again?
EBDSA member Fred Glass teaches labor history at City College of
San Francisco. He has written about the Oakland General Strike, made a
film about it, and helped design the exhibit for the fiftieth
anniversary at the Oakland Museum of California in 1996. In other
words, he has been obsessed with it ever since he found out it
happened and would like to share his obsession with you.
You must show a vaccination card at the door!

** 🌹DECEMBER 4TH RALLY TO DEMAND HAZARD PAY FOR FRONTLINE
TRANSIT WORKERS
------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday,
December 4 | noon–2 p.m.
Frank Ogawa Plaza at Oakland City Hall
♿️
Throughout the pandemic, even as Covid-19 deaths soared, bus
operators, mechanics, and other frontline transit workers reported to
work every day, putting their lives on the line, keeping transit
running so other Bay Area essential workers could get to their jobs at
hospitals, grocery stores, and other critical destinations. Despite
this -- no transit agency has recognized their sacrifices to keep the
Bay Area moving. That’s why we are supporting union members at ATU 192
in their campaigns for hazard pay. It’s time for AC Transit to come to
the table and meet their demands for hazard pay, justly compensating
frontline transit workers for their risk and sacrifices. Join us at
12:00pm on December 4th, 2021 at Frank Ogawa Plaza in front of Oakland
City Hall to stand in solidarity with frontline transit workers and
make their voices heard loud and clear.

** 🌹2022 ELECTORAL FIELD TEAM LAUNCH
------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday,
December 7 | 6–7:30 p.m.
UAW 2865 Office, 2730 Telegraph Ave,
Berkeley ♿️
Join East Bay DSA's Electoral Committee for a launch of
our field program for the 2022 election cycle!
While our chapter hasn't endorsed any candidates or campaigns yet,
rest assured that there are exciting class-struggle campaigns in the
works. Regardless of who we endorse, we are going to need a strong
field operation in 2022, to not only collect signatures and knock on
doors but to have deep conversations with thousands of voters about
working class power.
At this meeting, we will develop some preliminary plans regarding
our field team, with the intention of building it into an
over-hundred-person canvassing machine, and launch a pilot canvassing
program to start testing out raps and building our skills as
canvassers.
After the meeting, we'll gather at a bar for a drink and get to
know our comrades!
Masks required. Proof of vaccination will be checked at the
door.

------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday,
December 7 | 6:30–8:30 p.m.
East Bay Community Space, 507 55th St,

Jacobin's the ABCs of Capitalism! The three parts are Understanding
Capitalism, Capitalism, and the State, and finally Capitalism and
Class Struggle.
For this event, we'll be talking about “Capitalism and the State.”
What is the relationship between capitalism and the state? Is the
state a neutral body or is it inherently biased towards capital?
(Hint: It's the latter.) And if it is biased towards capital, what can
we as socialists do to counteract that bias? Join us to discuss these
fundamental questions, and get to know your comrades in person!

DSA covers a wide range not just in territory but in conditions and

represented and engaged, we are considering a branch structure similar
to what has been done in other DSA chapters including DSA LA, DSA
Atlanta, and Metro DC DSA. Branches can be formed in many ways and we

SIGN UP TO TALK TO A MOBILIZER!
Are you a new DSA member? Or are
you looking to get more involved with East Bay DSA's projects and
campaigns? Sign up to talk to a mobilizer!
Here are three reasons to sign up to talk to a mobilizer:
1.
Meet a fellow socialist organizer
We want to build a movement of
millions of working class people and change the exploitative and
oppressive system in which we live, but we do that first and foremost
by building one-to-one connections with each other.
2. Answer your questions
Learn more about DSA, the local East
Bay chapter, and our different committees and projects.
3. Get more involved
The main thing a mobilizer will help you
with is getting more involved in DSA. Maybe there’s a campaign or
project you’re particularly interested in, or maybe you’re a blank
slate and you don’t really know what to do. Either way, a mobilizer
will help you figure it out.

The issue is Socialism versus Capitalism. I am for Socialism
because I am for humanity. We have been cursed with the reign of gold
long enough. Money constitutes no proper basis of civilization. The
time has come to regenerate society — we are on the eve of universal
change.
