Shut 👏 Them 👏 All 👏 Down 👏 The Homestead detention center in Florida, which has housed thousands of migrant children since 2018 and has become a symbol of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, will soon shut down.

Although we still have a long way to go before we fully stop Trump's hateful policies, this victory shows the impact #PeopleLikeUs have when we come together, get into good trouble, and fight for change.  

Tom Wong, a University of California, San Diego professor and NAL board member, surveyed more than 600 asylum seekers affected by Trump’s controversial “remain in Mexico” policy. He came to a horrifying conclusion: People are being sent to die.

While migrants wait in Mexico for their cases to be processed, they are often threatened with physical violence and many end up becoming homeless. This comes after living in the dismal conditions of a detention center; 85% of those surveyed reported that “immigration detention facilities failed to provide adequate food and water and that they were unable to sleep due to overcrowding, cold temperatures and other conditions.” #PeopleLikeUs must stand up and speak out about the atrocities caused by Trump’s cruel and inhumane policies.

Even though the 2020 election has the majority of the spotlight, the local elections happening in dozens of states across the country early next week are so important. They determine the policies that shape our daily lives and impact the rights of #PeopleLikeUs, which is why we must vote!
