Dear John,
When it comes to crayons, children tend to gravitate toward bright colors. So, when a young student of mine began drawing every picture using black crayon only, I had to understand why. I’ve been working at Educare Chicago for 23 years, a program of Start Early, and I knew this was a sign of something going on at home.
I was able to share my concerns with our family support specialists, who in turn did a home visit and learned that the family’s lights were out – which is why the student’s drawings were all in black. The family was living with relatives at the time, so our team helped the student’s mother obtain her own housing and connected her with utility payment assistance programs.
These sorts of discussions are standard procedure for Educare Chicago ─ a direct result of Start Early’s deep understanding that early learning programs depend on family engagement.
This work is challenging and rewarding, and it has the power to shape the lives of the children and families in our programs. But we need your help to keep it all going.
We’ve extended our Giving Tuesday matching gift deadline for just one more day – and we’d be honored to count you among our campaign supporters.
At Start Early, we believe that parents are a child’s first educators, which is why we prioritize family engagement in our early learning programs like Educare Chicago. Family engagement helps create consistency between the home and school environments while also increasing support for children’s learning at home, empowering parents and improving family well-being.
Will you consider a donation right now to support this essential work? Even $10 a month makes a big difference in helping children and families thrive. |
When I reconnected with this family years later, I was delighted to learn they were still living successfully on their own.
The supports available through high-quality early childhood programs don’t just provide for the needs of students while they’re in the classroom; they also address challenges at home that could keep a student from thriving in preschool and beyond.
We can’t do this work without you. Please give now to have your donation matched as we won’t be able to extend the deadline any further. |
Sincerely,
|
