Over the last few years, I have stood alongside thousands of individuals protesting the unorthodox nominations of Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. We knew what was at stake if they got appointed. And we were right.
This morning, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case that will directly challenge Roe v Wade. SCOTUS’s conservative majority signaled that it would likely uphold Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban and would go further to overturn US abortion rights that have existed for nearly 50 years. The decision would trigger abortion restrictions or bans in 50% of states in the US.
But while the GOP is determined to protect life before birth, it could care less about life after birth. Why else would it defend guns that shoot up our schools and kill our kids? Or refuse to vote for life-saving social support in the build back better bill? Or slow the rate of climate change that continues to threaten our existence?
This is not a pro-life system. This is not about our collective health or wellbeing. This is about control. And the only way to take back our power is to fight for our rights and build a system that is life affirming for all (not some).

America may soon be a land of abortion deserts. [[link removed]] If the Supreme Court overturns Roe, it’s likely that the red states will ban abortion through so-called ‘trigger laws’ threatening the lives of millions of people. [click to tweet] [[link removed]]
The end of the viability line. [[link removed]] [[link removed]]If the Supreme Court lets Mississippi ban abortion at 15 weeks, before fetal viability, much more than that will be lost. [click to tweet] [[link removed]]

Is society coming apart? [[link removed]] Despite Thatcher and Reagan’s best efforts, there is and has always been such a thing as society. The question is not whether it exists, but what shape it must take in a post-pandemic world. [click to tweet] [[link removed]]

Forced pregnancy is taking away a person’s constitutional and human right to control their body and their future. Denying someone abortion care has devastating consequences: it can jeopardize their health, economic wellbeing and ability to determine their individual and family future. I rarely talk about my abortion story. I remember feeling not ready. I remember being scared. I remember the isolation and shame in its aftermath. The circumstances don’t matter. What matters is that I made the choice for myself. That decision marked a turning point in my life’s story. Because it was the first time in my adult life that I chose myself. And from that moment on, I knew that I had to be responsible for my decisions. That choices are not always clear or easy, but they must be made. Looking back, I wish I knew then what I know now - that abortion is safe and normal and essential to our wellbeing. I wish I knew that I was not alone. I wish I knew to fight for it - that this right to bodily autonomy was not, in fact, fundamental, but under threat by people in power who want to control us. And so I share this now in solidarity with all of you who have had an abortion or who have been impacted by one (which is likely all of us). I see you and I’m with you.
