Law Enforcement News Police Unions Blame ACLU For Rash Of Recent Smash-and-Grab Robberies: 'Voters Were Lied To' Police union leaders are blaming the ACLU for the recent smash-and-grab robberies that have plagued California ahead of holiday shopping season. "When society removes accountability for bad behavior, criminals get emboldened to commit more crimes, drug addicts thumb their noses at mandatory treatment and vandalism and petty theft turn into riotous looting and murder," President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, Craig Lally, told Fox News. "One does not need to be clairvoyant to have predicted that in California the ACLU’s Proposition 47 would turn a family trip to the mall or a Home Depot into a dangerous gamble for our residents." The Los Angeles Police Protective League is among a list of police unions that are sponsoring a website called ACLU Watch, which is "dedicated to fighting for victim’s rights, accountability for criminals, and exposing those that defend the indefensible." The website launched this week and includes data on issues such as "weakening public safety," "undermining victims' rights," "sexual offenders," and "hate groups white supremacists." Sponsors of the site include: San José Police Officers Association, San Francisco Police Officers Association, Seattle Police Officers Guild, San Diego Police Officers Association, Sacramento Police Officers Association, and the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, and the Los Angeles Police Protective League. FOX News Sentencing Set For Gang Member Convicted Of Murdering Whittier Police Officer Keith Boyer Sentencing is set Wednesday for a gang member convicted of opening fire on two Whittier police officers, killing one and wounding the other, along with killing a man in East Los Angeles earlier the same morning. Michael Christopher Mejia, 30, was found guilty Sept. 1 of two counts of first-degree murder and one count each of attempted murder, carjacking and possession of a firearm by a felon. Jurors also found true the special circumstance allegations of murder of a peace officer in the performance of his duties, murder for the purpose of avoiding arrest and multiple murders. Jurors also found true gang and gun allegations. He is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. Mejia was convicted for the Feb. 20, 2017, killings of Keith Boyer, a 53-year-old Whittier police officer who was the first officer in the city killed in the line of duty in 37 years, and 47-year-old Roy Torres. Mejia told authorities after his arrest that Torres was his cousin, but Torres' relatives insisted that he was not related to Mejia. The attempted murder count involved then-Whittier police Officer Patrick Hazell, who was shot in the abdomen. Over the objection of the two prosecutors in the trial, the District Attorney's Office dropped its bid to seek the death penalty against Mejia in February. The reversal came just over two months after District Attorney George Gascon was sworn into office. NBC 4 Restaurant Employee Accused Of Leaving Anti-Police Message On LAPD Officer's Food Order A Los Angeles Police Department officer is upset after a food worker allegedly left a hateful message on his order. Longtime LAPD officer Eric Mollinedo told FOX 11 that while he and his colleague were grabbing food at the Veggie Grill in the 6300 block of Sunset Boulevard, someone left a message that read "ACAB" on a wrapper of their burger. "I showed my partner and we both were kind of shocked," Mollinedo said. "That to us means, ‘all cops are b******s.’" The two LAPD officers told FOX 11 that they showed the restaurant manager the hateful message. The employee allegedly responsible for leaving the message came forward and even told the two officers to their faces that he hates the police and flipped the bird at Mollinedo and his partner – all in front of the restaurant manager, the officer told FOX 11. FOX 11 later learned that the restaurant employee accused of leaving the hateful message has been suspended. FOX 11 Mother With Baby In Stroller Robbed In Driveway Of Hancock Park Home, Video Shows Los Angeles police released surveillance video of the moment two men cornered and robbed a woman who was with her baby in the driveway of their Hancock Park home. LAPD said the frightening robbery occurred Sunday around 5:10 p.m. when the mother and her infant child were coming back from a walk. Footage shows the woman opening the gate to her home while the child waited in a stroller right beside her. Moments later, two men hop out of an idling car across the street to follow the woman and her baby through the open gate and corner them. According to police, the men left in the waiting car parked nearby after taking a diaper bag and a bottle cooler. The woman and her child were physically unharmed. The suspect vehicle was described as a silver sedan with tinted windows. One suspect is described as a Black man between 20- to 29-years-old, and he was seen wearing a light-colored mask, a black hoodie, red sweat pants with white writing or a logo and white shoes. The second suspect is described as a Black man between 20- to 29-years-old. He was wearing a black face mask, a gray hoodie, black sweat pants and black shoes. Anyone with information about the case can contact Wilshire robbery Detective M. Flores at (213) 922-8217. ABC 7 Police Seek Info On 3 Suspects In String Of Robberies Targeting Elderly Police Tuesday were seeking information on one man and two women wanted in a string of robberies targeting “lone and elderly” victims in the downtown Los Angeles area. The robberies occurred between Feb. 8 and Nov. 16, but the exact number of victims is not known, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The suspects are known to approach the victims in various rental vehicles, some with out-of-state-plates, driven by the male suspect. Police said the female suspects have used a number of lures, including asking the victims for directions to a church or pharmacy; offering the victims assistance; offering free gold; and telling the victims they would like to “bless” their money. During two of the robberies, the suspects blew an unknown powder in the victims’ faces before taking their belongings and fleeing, according to police. The three suspects are described as fluent in Spanish and speaking with a Middle Eastern accent when they speak English. The women were described as having blonde or black hair and some gold teeth, and one was described as having an unspecified facial disfigurement, according to police. One of the women always sits in the front passenger side of the vehicle during the robberies, while the other, who lures the victims, sits in the rear passenger side. No description of the male suspect was provided. MyNewsLA.com Amazon Driver Carjacked In San Pedro, Van Later Found Empty Of Packages Police are searching for the suspect who carjacked an Amazon van in San Pedro and made off with all the packages inside. An armed robber pointed a gun at the Amazon driver in the 800 block of West 12th Street around 6 p.m. and took off with the vehicle, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. A short while later, the van was found a few blocks away, but everything inside had been stolen. It's not clear how many packages were inside at the time of the carjacking. ABC 7 Two Men Plead Guilty In LA For Roles In Mac Miller's Fatal Overdose Two of three men charged with supplying the fentanyl-laced pills that led to rapper Mac Miller's fatal overdose pleaded guilty Tuesday in Los Angeles to a federal drug distribution charge. Stephen Walter, 48, of Westwood, and Ryan Reavis, 38, formerly of West Los Angeles, entered their pleas during separate Zoom hearings to a count of distribution of fentanyl, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Sentencing hearings were scheduled for Walter on March 7 and Reavis on April 4. On Sept. 4, 2018, at the direction of Walter, Reavis supplied counterfeit oxycodone pills to a third co-defendant, Cameron Pettit, 30, of West Hollywood, according to papers filed in Los Angeles federal court. Reavis admitted knowing that the pills contained fentanyl or some other controlled substance. Shortly after Reavis handed over the fentanyl-laced pills, Pettit allegedly supplied the pills to Malcolm McCormick -- who recorded and performed under the name Mac Miller -- two days before the 26-year-old rapper suffered a fatal overdose in Studio City on Sept. 7, 2018, federal prosecutors said. The case against Pettit is pending. NBC 4 Panorama City Man Accused Of Tasing Officer At Capitol Riot Wants Confession Tossed A Panorama City man who apparently admitted to FBI agents that he tased a police officer during the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection is now trying to get his confession tossed, as a federal judge on Tuesday ordered the public release of his videotaped interview with investigators. An attorney representing Daniel Rodriguez alleged in a recent court filing that the FBI violated Rodriguez’s Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination by not properly giving him his Miranda warning while interviewing him shortly after his arrest. A Dec. 9 hearing is set on whether the confession can be used by prosecutors. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson on Tuesday ruled that video of the FBI interview, portions of which were previously played in her Washington D.C. courtroom, should be released, according to court records. Rodriguez, during the apparently-tearful FBI interview, confessed to tasering Metropolitan Police Department Officer Michael Fanone, according to a written transcript of the interview filed with the court. The officer, in previous news interviews, has described a mob threatening to kill him after looting his ammunition, police radio and badge while he lay on the steps of the Capitol. Los Angeles Daily News Home Of Marilyn Manson Searched After Several Women Accuse Him Of Physical, Sexual Abuse: LASD Authorities searched the home of rocker Marilyn Manson on Monday after allegations of physical and sexual abuse by several women. Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Eva Jimenez said a search warrant was served on the home of Manson, whose legal name is Brian Hugh Warner. She would give no further details. The Sheriff’s Department said in February that its detectives had begun investigating Manson over reports of domestic violence between 2009 and 2011 in West Hollywood, where he lived at the time. The women involved were not identified, but several women have publicly alleged this year that they were physically, sexually and emotionally abused by Manson around the time of the incidents under investigation, and some have filed lawsuits. Manson’s attorney Howard E. King declined immediate comment. Manson has denied the allegations, and King has called them “provably false.” The search of Manson’s home was first reported by TMZ. The 52-year-old shock rocker’s former fiancee, “Westworld” actor Evan Rachel Wood, named him as her abuser for the first time in an Instagram post in February. KTLA 5 3 Robberies In Beverly Hills Result In 5 Arrests: Police Five people were arrested following a series of robberies in Beverly Hills, officials announced Wednesday. Two people were arrested in Los Angeles on Tuesday, a few hours after a pair of robberies in Beverly Hills, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department. L.A. residents Chynelle Tyla-Lee Rhyne, 22, and Justice Rasheedmalike Gill, 25, face charges for two robberies that occurred at about 10:50 p.m. Monday on Charleville Boulevard, police said. Rhyne and Gill fled the city in a black SUV, but their car was found near South Figueroa Street and West 54th Street in the Vermont Square area of South Los Angeles. Rhyne and Gill were arrested by BHPD detectives and members of the Los Angeles Police Department at about 1:35 a.m. Tuesday. Police said a replica gun was found in their car, and Rhyne was charged with drawing an imitation firearm, while Gill was charged with robbery. In the case of another robbery that took place at about 4:19 p.m. on Beverly Boulevard near Doheny Drive, police found three suspects who fled on foot, officials said. KTLA 5 Man In His 70s Assaulted By 2 Women At Pasadena Bus Stop: Police Police are searching for two women after a man in his 70s was assaulted while waiting at a Pasadena bus stop on Monday, officials said. Just before 1:30 p.m., the victim was waiting at a bus stop in the 600 block of Los Robles Avenue when a vehicle stopped just south of the bus stop, Lt. Sean M. Dawkins of the Pasadena Police Department told KTLA. A female passenger got out of the car with an unleashed dog and walked towards the victim, police said. “The dog growled and barked at the victim and the victim asked the suspect why the dog was barking at him,” the department said. The woman then told the victim to “shut up” and punched him in the face, according to police. The man stood up and raised his cane at the woman to defend himself, the department said. A second woman, the driver of the vehicle, approached the man from behind and allegedly shoved him to the ground. Then both women kicked the victim multiple times in the body and the head, police said. They then went back into their dark colored sedan and left the scene, going south on Los Robles Avenue. The victim had cuts and abrasions to the face and abrasions to the knees, police said, adding that he did not want to go to the hospital. KTLA 5 U.S. Appeals Court Upholds California’s Ban On Large-Capacity Firearms Magazines A federal appeals court decided Tuesday to uphold California’s ban on large-capacity ammunition magazines in a ruling that is likely to lead to the court’s approval of the state’s ban on assault weapons. In an en banc decision, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 7-4 that a state law that limits the size of magazines — ammunition feeding devices for firearms — does not significantly interfere with the right to self-defense. The court noted that there was no evidence that a person has been unable to defend a home because of lack of a large-capacity magazine. During the past 50 years, the court said, large-capacity magazines have been used in about three-quarters of mass shootings that resulted in 10 or more deaths, and in 100% of massacres with 20 or more deaths. “The ban on legal possession of large-capacity magazines reasonably supports California’s effort to reduce the devastating damage wrought by mass shootings,” Judge Susan P. Graber, a Clinton appointee, wrote for the court. Two other gun control cases have been put on hold pending a decision in the magazine case. Tuesday’s decision indicates that California’s ban on assault weapons, which a lower court had struck down, is also likely to be ruled constitutional. Los Angeles Times Police: Man Stabs 2 Indiana Cops In ‘Unprovoked' Attack, Is Shot Two Indianapolis police officers were stabbed early Wednesday morning during an attack near a residential area on the north side of Indianapolis, according to law enforcement officials. The officers shot and wounded the man after they were stabbed, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Chief Chris Bailey said, and both the officers and the man were in stable condition early Wednesday. A police report filed in the case indicates a 20-year-old man was arrested and is facing two preliminary charges of attempted murder. The stabbing occurred after officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the 1400 block of Fairfield Avenue, a neighborhood near East 38th Street and Fall Creek Parkway North Drive, shortly after 1 a.m. Police said two officers encountered a man "who reported another individual was harassing him." The officers told the man they'd try to find the person, police said, and, as they turned and walked away, were stabbed by the man who reported the alleged harassment. "The officers then gave verbal commands and discharged their weapons when the suspect failed to listen to their commands," Bailey told reporters. "This was 100% unprovoked." The Indianapolis Star Student Shoots, Kills 3, Injures 8 At Michigan High School A 15-year-old sophomore opened fire at his Michigan high school, killing three students, including a 16-year-old boy who died in a deputy’s patrol car on the way to a hospital, authorities said. Eight other people were wounded, some critically, including a 14-year-old girl who was placed on a ventilator after surgery. Investigators were still trying to determine a motive for the shooting Tuesday at Oxford High School, located in a community of about 22,000 people roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Detroit, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “The person that’s got the most insight and the motive is not talking,” he said at a news conference late Tuesday. Deputies rushed to the school around lunch time as more than 100 calls flooded 911 dispatchers with reports of a shooter. They arrested the student in a hallway within minutes of their arrival. He put his hands in the air as deputies approached, Bouchard said. The boy's father on Friday bought the 9 mm Sig Sauer used in the shooting, Bouchard said. He didn't know why the man bought the gun, which his son had been posting pictures of and practicing shooting, Bouchard said. Authorities didn’t immediately release the boy's name. Associated Press Public Safety News At Least One Dead Following Chatsworth Fire Fire crews responded to the scene of a structure fire in Chatsworth on Tuesday evening on West Lassen Street. The structure fire, which consumed a mobile home at Valle Verde Mobile Home Park, did not reach any other structures. Initial reports from the Los Angeles Fire Department had indicated that no one was injured during the fire. It took 31 firefighters nearly 30 minutes to completely extinguish the fire. However, the ongoing search revealed at least one body, that of a woman, underneath nearly four feet of debris. LAFD reported that two occupants may have left the scene prior to the arrival of authorities. No other structures were damaged at the time, and and investigation is ongoing to determine cause. LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section is on the scene, as is protocol in the case of a fatality. CBS 2 L.A. County Has No Plans For An Omicron Lockdown No significant new coronavirus-related restrictions are planned in Los Angeles County following the emergence of the Omicron variant, a top health official said Tuesday. “At this moment, we have really, I think, sensible precautions in place,” Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer told the county Board of Supervisors. L.A. County’s existing COVID-19 rules are already among the strictest in the state. They include a blanket mandate for residents to wear masks in indoor public spaces, regardless of whether they’ve been vaccinated. The county also requires patrons and employees of indoor bars, wineries, breweries, distilleries, nightclubs and lounges to show proof that they’ve been fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Similar but more expansive rules in the city of Los Angeles cover a host of additional businesses, including indoor restaurants, gyms and movie theaters. But despite the worries accompanying the new variant and the approach of winter, officials in L.A. and throughout California are nowhere close to publicly discussing the kind of stringent restrictions that were in effect at this time last year, when a round of regional stay-at-home orders shut down or severely constrained many aspects of the state’s economy and residents’ lives. That attitude is also reflected at the federal level. Los Angeles Times Local Government News 'Ghost Guns' Banned By Los Angeles City Council The City Council Tuesday unanimously approved an ordinance to prohibit the possession, purchase, sale, receipt and transportation of "ghost guns" in Los Angeles. The ordinance was requested by a motion from Councilmen Paul Koretz and Paul Krekorian, which also passed through the council unanimously. "There's no question that ghost guns are an epidemic nationwide, but today we have an obligation to protect the lives of Angelenos, and this is one step that we can take to do all that," Koretz said before the vote Tuesday. The ordinance prohibits the possession, purchase, sale, receipt or transport of a non-serialized unfinished firearm frame or receiver or non-serialized firearm. Such weapons -- known as "ghost guns" because they are virtually untraceable -- can be assembled by unlicensed buyers from legally purchased kits. The unfinished parts are inexpensive and not required under federal law to have serial numbers or a background check to purchase. According to the gun control advocacy organization Everytown For Gun Safety, an AR-15 ghost gun kit and lower receiver can be purchased for $345. FOX 11 LA City Council Moves Toward Closing Gap On 14-Mile Bike Path The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday, Nov. 30, took a major step toward creating a continuous 14-mile bicycle network from the Santa Monica Pier to USC and Exposition Park. The City Council unanimously voted to use eminent domain to take portions of eight properties, between Motor Avenue and Overland Avenue, to construct a 0.28-mile bike path as part of an effort to close a one-mile gap in the Expo Line Bikeway. “This will close a critical gap in the around-14 mile east-west cycling network. It will connect downtown L.A. with Santa Monica and all the destinations in between,” said Councilman Paul Koretz, who represents the neighborhood with the path’s gap. The councilman said he has been working on this project for 12 years. Carlos Rios, principal transportation engineer for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, said the city has already secured five of the 13 properties needed to close the gap, and the eight being voted on Tuesday were the last ones needed. The five already-secured properties were obtained by the city through negotiation settlements, not eminent domain, according to the City Attorney’s Office.
