John,

The Supreme Court held 49 years ago in Roe v. Wade that a woman’s right to control her body and health was a constitutionally protected right. And for 49 years Republicans have fought tooth and nail to deny freedom to women to make this basic and personal health care decision.

In the past, Republicans limited themselves to adding burdensome restrictions on the right to choose, but now with a Trump-stacked extremist majority on the Supreme Court, Republicans have been emboldened to bring a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade

The Supreme Court heard arguments today in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case in which Mississippi attempted to ban abortion after 15 weeks. This is the greatest threat to abortion in nearly half a century, and a 6-3 conservative supermajority could end the right to abortion as we know it.

This moment is the culmination of decades of planning and execution by far-right extremist Republicans to stack the courts with anti-choice judges. They have cheated to pack the courts with extremist judges who don’t see a woman’s freedom to control her personal medical decisions as a constitutionally protected right.

The danger to women’s rights that can come from this ruling underscores how desperately we need court reform. We need to expand and re-balance the Supreme Court, and rid it of extremist Republican partisanship.
