Today the Supreme Court heard a case challenging an extreme Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks — and the Court seems poised to uphold the restrictive law. If the Court uses this case to strike down Roe v. Wade – which many fear will happen – abortions will become illegal in at least 20 GOP-led states.
Once again legal abortion access is on the line – and Congress has done nothing to try to protect it.
Ro has been calling on Congress to codify Roe v. Wade – making abortion access a national law that isn’t dependent on the Supreme Court – for years, but the same folks who have blocked so much of our progressive legislation are once again in the way.
Reproductive justice activists have been ringing the alarm for years as GOP state lawmakers introduced dozens of sweeping bills that would dramatically restrict abortion access, and Republicans in Congress mobilized to force hyper-conservative nominees onto the Supreme Court.
Over the past few years, those warnings have been vindicated.
This should be a wake-up call to all law-makers in this country.
We cannot allow fifty years of constitutional protections ensured by Roe v. Wade to expire in the shadows. Together we must fight all unconstitutional abortion bans so that everyone has the autonomy to make their own health care decisions.
Thanks for taking action,
Team Ro
