As the Build Back Better Act heads to the Senate, we have a
once-in-a-generation opportunity to establish a pathway to citizenship and
finally provide Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, farm
workers, and essential workers with the stability and equal protection
they deserve.

While currently the bill secures protections and work authorization for
undocumented individuals, it does not include a permanent pathway to
citizenship.

But the good news is that the Senate can finally include a pathway to
citizenship for millions of our community members and neighbors. That’s
why Alexandria joined 90 of her colleagues in Congress to urge the Senate
to augment the bill to include a pathway to permanent citizenship for
Dreamers and other temporary status holders before a vote.

Now is the moment to create a permanent solution for immigrants who live
and work on temporary status.

Over 10 million immigrants — students, essential workers, and community
members — are undocumented or live with temporary status^1, unsure of what
their futures in this country will look like.

Currently, the Build Back Better Act only includes a five-year parole
status for certain undocumented immigrants, yet another temporary form of
repreive. We must take this opportunity to create a real pathway to
citizenship for millions of our community members and neighbors.

Alexandria knows that whether or not Democrats keep their promise to
create a permanent solution to temporary status is a question of political
will. That is why she is fighting to keep up the pressure.

But some senators are hiding behind the Senate Parliamentarian’s
memorandum which states that for procedural reasons the pathway to
citizenship can’t be included — despite evidence to the contrary. The role
of the Parliamentarian is an advisory one, and their opinion isn’t
binding. So, we need our senators to step up and stop using the
Parlimentarian’s opinion as a scapegoat.

The moment is now. The
more messages we send to our senators, the stronger our call for action
will be.
