La Rose v. Her Majesty the Queen plaintiff Haana, 16, addresses the crowd at last Friday's press conference in Vancouver, BC. Greta Thunberg joined the young plaintiffs in solidarity.

Hello everyone,

Last Friday, thousands of Canadians came out to hear our big news. Joined by climate strikers and the legendary Greta Thunberg, 14 other young Canadians and I announced our constitutional climate change lawsuit against the federal government of Canada — La Rose v. Her Majesty the Queen

Every day, the climate crisis grows more dire. Our forests are burning. The seas are rising. This past summer, the water in our streams was so warm that the salmon were dying. As a member of the Tsitts Gitanee clan of the Haida Nation, this affects my food security and my ability to practice my culture.

My co-plaintiffs and I are watching our futures disappear.

That is why we are demanding that the courts uphold our Charter rights and protect us and generations to come from climate chaos. We are not asking for money. We are asking for a court-mandated, comprehensive plan that will put us on track to reduce our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions in line with the best available science.

Thank you for all you do to support young people like me. It is not too late to stop the worst impacts of the climate crisis, but we must act now.

Haana
