Citizens' Climate year-end appeal kicks off with strong Giving Tuesday

Looking for that perfect gift this holiday season? How about a livable world?

Citizens' Climate officially launched our year-end fundraiser yesterday, and we are happy to report that we exceeded our Giving Tuesday goal of $300,000, bringing in a total of $310,434! Thank you so much to everyone who pitched in!

But, we’re not ready for champagne and streamers quite yet...We still need to raise a total of $1.5 million by the end of the year.

Thanks in large part to the lobbying efforts of volunteers trained and supported by Citizens' Climate, a price on carbon is under consideration for the Build Back Better bill currently being negotiated in the Senate. In addition, advocacy from our volunteers was a key factor in four pieces of climate legislation being included in larger bills enacted this year. Another bill our volunteers lobbied for, the Growing Climate Solutions Act, has already passed the Senate and is now pending in the House.

If you haven’t had the chance to give yet or if you are in the position to give again, consider making a year-end donation today! Your donation to Citizens' Climate will help train, support, and mobilize ordinary people to effectively engage Congress to enact climate solutions like these and help us to continue the push for greater climate action in the coming year.

In other news this week:

  • ICYMI: Great op-eds in West Virginia: With all eyes on Sen. Manchin during the budget reconciliation negotiations, carbon pricing supporters in West Virginia are publishing op-eds in support of this crucial climate policy. Read and share this op-ed from Jim Probst, this op-ed from Jon Clark, and this op-ed from John Palmer.
  • Two new cosponsors: The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act has two new cosponsors. Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA-08) and Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA-06) cosponsored H.R. 2307 this past week, bringing the bill to 90 total House representatives in support.
  • Big green group endorses fee & dividend: The National Wildlife Federation has given a strong endorsement to carbon fee and dividend being included in reconciliation legislation. In a blog last month, the organization said, “Adding such a fee would supercharge the already historic climate investments in the [Build Back Better] bill while generating revenue to help pay for them.” You can share, like and reply to CCL’s tweet about NWF’s endorsement.
  • Environmental books for kids: California CCLer Christine Kramer recently published an article with climate change and environmental book recommendations for kids. The list, published in the San Clemente Times, comes just in time for holiday shopping, and includes books such as “My Friend Earth,” “No One Is Too Small To Make a Difference,” and many others.

If you have a little time: Check out this tweet

CCL recently tweeted about CEOs in Michigan supporting a carbon price. CEOs Jim MacInnes and Stephen Kircher have said that a carbon price is “an effective and efficient way to quickly reduce emissions.” See and share the tweet here.

If you have more time: Email Congress

As the Senate continues to work on the Build Back Better Act, this is a perfect time for CCLers to email their Democratic senators in support of a price on carbon in the Build Back Better Act. If you don’t have a Democratic senator, you can write to the president instead.

Media: CCL chapter featured in local news article

The Ashfield, Massachusetts, chapter of CCL recently submitted a press release to their local media outlet with a recap of CCL’s virtual conference. Greenfield Recorder reported on the story in an article on their website, chronicling the Grit and Gratitude conference and the “bold climate policy” that CCL works to pass.

CCLer Harry Dodson is quoted in the story saying that “our community wants climate action without delay.” Chapter leader Richard Prée emphasized that a carbon fee and dividend is intended to protect low and middle-income Americans.

Dodson goes on to note the climate-heightened weather experienced in Ashfield as motivation for the Ashfield chapter’s hard work on fixing the climate.
