When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, nonprofit service providers leapt into action. They fed newly hungry neighbors, helped people access health services, supported children through trauma, and assisted with millions of applications for emergency relief. They didn’t ask when they’d get paid for that work, they just did it.
NYC relies on those nonprofits to provide essential services to the most vulnerable New Yorkers. But when it comes to reimbursement for that work, the City regularly takes months or even more than a year to pay organizations, forcing them into financial uncertainty and debt.
That’s why Mayor-elect Eric Adams and I launched a joint transition taskforce today to fix what’s broken in NYC’s work with nonprofits. [[link removed]]
Building a more equitable, sustainable city means supporting NYC residents who rely on nonprofit services. It also means supporting the indispensable nonprofit employees who provide those services. NYC’s nonprofits employ over half a million people, mostly women and people of color who make far less than their public and private sector counterparts. When nonprofits struggle financially, it's the most vulnerable New Yorkers who suffer most.
Mayor-Elect Eric Adams and I are committed to rolling up our sleeves together to tackle critical problems that get in the way of delivering for New Yorkers. Read our joint op-ed on why we’re collaborating to hit reset on the City’s relationship with the nonprofits that are central to serving our communities. [[link removed]]
New York is only as great as our ability to care for our city’s most vulnerable. Our first meeting with nonprofit and agency stakeholders today was a step in that direction. Let’s get to work!
With hope,
Brad
