Today, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a challenge to a Mississippi law that bans abortion at 15 weeks of pregnancy. This challenge is a major threat to reproductive freedoms in our country that are currently guaranteed by Roe v. Wade.
We want to make it clear: Democratic Attorneys General believe that every person deserves the freedom to make their own decisions about their reproductive health — and that includes the decision to have an abortion.
This Mississippi case could unravel the constitutional right to an abortion. The state has directly asked the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. If that happens, dozens of states will move to ban abortions; which means that millions of women and people who could become pregnant could lose abortion access.
If SCOTUS allows this ban to stand, it would erase nearly 50 years of precedent. This is despite the fact that 80% of the country supports the right to an abortion, and according to a recent poll, 75% of Americans believe that decisions on abortion should be left to patients and their doctors.
We can’t sit on the sidelines right now. We have to fight for our communities and take proactive measures to protect abortion access.
