Dear John,
The Amazon rainforest -- the lungs of the earth
-- is still burning. These fires threaten the Indigenous peoples, traditional communities, and millions of species who call the rainforest home.
The fires are largely a result of political changes in Brazil that have resulted in less enforcement of forest protections, illegal deforestation, and invasion of Indigenous territories. And the companies that commit these violations are being propped up with massive financial backing from Wall Street giants like BlackRock.
Now, Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Chuy García are taking steps to pressure the CEOs of major Wall Street firms, calling out their complicity in the Amazon’s destruction. These bold legislators are trying to build support in the House of Representatives -- but they need your help.
Help end the destruction of the Amazon rainforest: Tell your Representative to hold investors accountable for profiting off deforestation!
In September, nearly 65% of the Amazon -- the most diverse rainforest on earth -- was engulfed in flames.
Yet Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro continues to pursue massive rollbacks of environmental and Indigenous rights protections, heightening the risks of ongoing deforestation. And a new economic analysis says we may be just two years away from an irreversible “tipping point.”
But there’s still time to save one of our largest and most biodiverse rainforests. And it starts with pressuring Wall Street giants to take action.
The biggest investors bankrolling the Amazon destruction -- mostly based in the United States -- must stop financing destructive practices like deforestation and land grabbing. Pressure from Congress can push them to do so, but your Representative needs to join the fight.
Take action now: Tell your Representative to stand up to the investors profiting from the Amazon fires!
Protecting our rainforests is an essential ingredient to preventing climate chaos. So it’s great that environmental champions like Representative Tlaib are working in Congress to hold corporations accountable for their role in fueling the fires.
Friends of the Earth members like you have put grassroots pressure on dirty corporations like BlackRock before. Now, it’s time for our elected officials to join the fight. But your legislator will only act if they feel pressure from constituents like you!
Sign your name: Tell your Representative to join Rep. Tlaib in demanding accountability from Wall Street firms!
Standing for the forests,
