The Supreme Court hears oral arguments for the most significant abortion case in decades starting today — so give me a moment to explain how we got here.
The Republican-led state legislature in Mississippi passed an unconstitutional abortion ban after just 15 weeks of pregnancy.
Before leaving office, Donald Trump stacked the Supreme Court with three right-wing justices and secured conservatives a 6-3 majority. After years of chipping away at Roe v. Wade , this case might be the final tipping point in the GOP’s efforts to overturn almost 50 years of precedent.
Even though the majority of Americans still support Roe , the GOP wants to strip away reproductive freedoms to appease and energize their right-wing base. It’s despicable.
All across the country, Republican legislatures are passing unconstitutional abortion bans, from Texas to Mississippi and beyond, to try and bring a legal challenge before the Supreme Court.
Right now, we need to rally together to defend Roe v. Wade and uplift organizations that support equal access to abortion. In Mississippi, there is just one abortion clinic serving the entire state — the situation could not be more dire. We must protect abortion access in Mississippi.

As the only Senator who’s worked at Planned Parenthood, you better believe I’m outraged by this unconscionable abortion ban. I would love nothing more than to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and preserve a woman’s right to an abortion once and for all before this case is even decided.
But as long as the filibuster exists, Mitch McConnell can rule from the minority and halt all our attempts at progress. It’s why it’s critically important we expand our Democratic majority in the midterm elections so we can abolish the filibuster, expand the Supreme Court, and defend reproductive freedom.
Right now, I refuse to sit around and wait while the Supreme Court decides the fate of safe and equal abortion access. We must take action and help those in Mississippi directly impacted by this law.
