Mike believes that the future of our country depends on bold changes to education -- and he just announced a major investment designed to set those changes in motion for thousands of American public school students.

In a short video posted today and a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Mike unveiled a five-year, $750 million national initiative to advance and expand access to public charter schools.

The funding in 20 U.S. metro areas, including New York City, will support existing charter and autonomous schools, open new high quality charter schools, foster city- and state-level conditions for sustainable progress, support charter school teachers and leaders of color, and create 150,000 additional charter school seats for children.

This investment in public charter schools builds on years of advocating for student success and calling for greater accountability in our schools. Mike has seen first-hand the impact that public charter schools can have -- as well as the challenges they face from entrenched interests.

His redoubled focus comes after failures in the public education system have gone from bad to worse since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students everywhere have suffered learning loss, while already substantial achievement gaps for low-income and children of color grow even wider.

"We need a new, stronger model of public education that is based on evidence, centered on children, and built around achievement, excellence and accountability for all," Mike wrote in the Wall Street Journal. "The future of America’s most vulnerable children -- and of our country -- is riding on whether we can deliver it."
