John,
On December 1, the Supreme Court will hear arguments about a Mississippi law that would make most abortions illegal after 15 weeks of pregnancy. This is the first direct challenge to Roe v. Wade that the court has taken up in decades. And if the law stands, women across the country will likely lose their right to choose.
This law has been blocked by two federal courts already, and it’s been sitting on the Supreme Court’s docket for a year. But now that the court’s conservatives have a 6-to-3 majority, they’ve agreed to hear the case.
We’re about to witness one of the most serious challenges to women’s reproductive rights since Roe v. Wade was established in 1973. That’s why I’m coming to you now.
Will you take a minute to instantly add your name to our petition demanding that women’s reproductive health and rights are protected by the constitution? We can’t allow this case to move forward without our voices being heard.
What makes this case so alarming is that if the Mississippi law is upheld, Roe v. Wade will be overturned. That would then cause “trigger laws” in 12 states to go into effect, which would immediately ban abortions in those states, with more states likely to follow.
Millions of women would be forced to travel long distances to get an abortion. But women without the means to find and access a legal abortion might seek out an illegal, potentially unsafe procedure. Or they might be forced to continue with a risky pregnancy or birth that puts their life in jeopardy.
My progressive colleagues and I have consistently fought to preserve the reproductive rights of women, but this is a cause that requires all of us to stand up and speak out.
Please click here to instantly add your name to our petition before oral arguments are heard by the Supreme Court on December 1. Experts warn that this is a perilous moment for Roe v. Wade, so we have to unite and do everything we can to stop it from being overturned.
Thanks,
Jared
