Just released: "Mortality in State and Federal Prisons, 2001?2019 ? Statistical Tables [ [link removed] ]"; and "Mortality in Local Jails, 2000?2019 ? Statistical Tables [ [link removed] ]"*

These reports present detailed statistical tables on mortality in state and federal prisons and in local jails. They provide information on cause of death; decedent characteristics, such as age, sex, and race or ethnicity; and mortality rates of inmate populations, compared to the general U.S. adult population.

Findings are based on BJS?s Mortality in Correctional Institutions (MCI) [ [link removed] ] annual data collection, formerly the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program. The MCI obtained national-, state-, and incident-level data on persons who died while in the physical custody of the 50 state departments of corrections from 2001 to 2019 or in the custody of the approximately 2,800 local jail jurisdictions with adult populations nationwide from 2000 to 2019.
