Dear John,
NVAHA’s mission is to promote healthy, sustainable and equitable communities that meet the diverse housing needs of Northern Virginia residents. We advocate for public policies that preserve and create affordable housing, we collaborate with underserved communities to build their power to participate in the civic arena, and we build political will to create communities that are diverse, inclusive and equitable for all who live here.
How do we do this?
- Through participation and leadership in local housing advisory boards and councils where we advocate for financial resources and land use policies to eliminate barriers to developing safe, quality affordable homes;
- Through community engagement initiatives where we lift up resident voices not at the table, to balance the power dynamic in our civic decision-making processes;
- Through housing research and data analysis to deconstruct systems and policies that create and perpetuate racial inequities.
There is no housing production or preservation of existing homes; there are no local trust fund dollars or strategies to create permanent supportive housing; there is no affordable housing near transit or expansion of affordable homeownership opportunities for Black and Brown residents without policy work and advocacy. That's what we do.
Let’s capitalize on the prioritization of housing happening now. COVID-19 brought new attention to racial inequities and housing instability that existed before the pandemic. It also established the primacy of a safe, quality place to call home and the interconnectedness of housing and health. Elected officials throughout Northern Virginia ran their election campaigns on a platform of creating more affordable housing, often identifying housing as their top priority. With all that our national health care crisis has taught us, now is the time to act.
From ending housing instability and homelessness to expanding homeownership opportunities, we are committed to holding our elected officials accountable to their housing promises – and we need your help.
Our programs are supported through grant funding and generous contributions from the community. Your donation will support our mission to create a Northern Virginia that is fair and inclusive and creates equitable opportunities for all.
Join us as community changemakers and support our work!
Thank you.
