Meet Neil - one of Mapperley's amazing Clean Champions!
neil
Neil is originally from Shropshire and now lives in Mapperley.
*Why do you volunteer as a Clean Champion? *That's easy, because my parents taught me to use bins. This was reinforced at school, as we were involved in the "Keep Britain Tidy campaign". The habit has stuck with me ever since and I will take it to my grave.
*What is the most surprising thing you have found so far when out litter picking? *A car roof rack which wouldn't fit in the plastic sack!
*Tell us a bit more about yourself. *I have an amazing wife and we are both very much into keeping fit. My favourite activities are Pilates, squash, racketball and walking/litter picking. We have 4 children and 8 grandchildren, so life is always interesting and we have lots of fun together. My favourite film is "Visit to a Small Planet" starring Jerry Lewis. It's a film for all the family. My favourite place to travel is Italy for the people, for the weather, for the landscapes, lakes, seascapes and for the marvellous architecture. Most of all for the wonderful hospitality. My favourite meal to cook an omelette packed full of tomatoes, courgettes, mushrooms, red and white onions. Quick to make and very nutritious.
*Anything else you’d like to share with us about you? *I don't only do litter picks near where I live; I cover a very big area. I found it more interesting to keep widening my horizon as time goes by. Also, most of the time, I only pick metal items. When I have 8-10 full bags, I take them to a scrap yard and send the money to charity.
*Thinking about becoming a Clean Champion? You'll get fresh air and exercise and help to keep Mapperley clean, and we'll send you a free litter picker and other equipment. *

Diversity in Books Fundraiser raises £25,000!
mapperley
During the summer Marvin Gyekye and others from the citizen’s panel realised schools and libraries did not have many books containing diversity, so they put together a fundraising plan to raise £10,000 to buy the books and then donate a diverse set of books to every school and our libraries.
A fun run was also organised that involved 4 libraries around the city. One of the aims was to ensure that the new central library has rich and diverse books that reflect Nottingham. A thank you was given to Councillor Campbell-Clarke who worked with the team on the project.
Mapperley Councillors Ayoola, Heely, and Mohammed supported a launch and fundraising event to raise money to buy diverse books to be donated.
Councillor Ayoola said “It’s very important to get the balance right in reference to diversity in the books that our children read in Schools & Libraries. Indeed, change is overdue! Glad to support.”
As October is Black History Month it was fitting to see so much activity from the community promoting diversity in books within schools - and the project eventually raised an amazing total of £25,000!

Christmas money tips
food
*With increases in bills and the cost of living as well as taxes going up and continuing issues around the pandemic, this Christmas will be a tough one for many. *
Taking out payday or doorstep loans is a bad idea - they might seem like an easy way to get cash quickly, but you'll end up paying an arm and a leg due to sky-high interest rates.
The cheapest places to borrow money will always be a bank, building society or Notts and Lincs Credit Union [ [link removed] ]- who may be able to help where others can't if you have a poor credit history.

Keeping your family safe this Christmas
Nottingham City Council’s Trading Standards team are asking Nottingham residents to be careful when buying presents for children:
* *Look for the CE or UKCA mark:* These symbols on the label or box mean the manufacturer has assessed the toy for safety
* *Button-batteries can kill:* Check they are screwed in firmly and safely before giving to a child
* *Check age restrictions:* Toys must be clearly marked with age restrictions - always follow them, they’re there for a reason
