Dear John,
This week was the seven-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. When I worked for the State of New York, I oversaw the Office of Storm Recovery. Five years after Sandy, I saw how long it takes to process funding and resources for the people who need it most. To this day, residents in NYCHA are still being shortchanged in the recovery efforts.

While climate disasters are indiscriminate in who is hit—rich or poor—the truth is that rebuilding only works for the few with means. I witnessed this firsthand when I worked on New York's relief efforts in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. The rich could get on a plane and evacuate while their neighborhoods were being reconstructed. The poor were left in dire straits with no shelter, electricity, food, water, or medicine.
And now, California is on fire. Those who can afford it will get to rebuild a brand new house. But the majority of people who are struggling to get by are more likely to suffer financial peril and homelessness.
I'm running for Congress in a city and a district with miles of coastline. It is not a question of if, but when, the next superstorm will hit and we are not prepared to handle the aftermath. We need a new approach to these increasing disasters. We can no longer rely on FEMA alone to handle the influx of destruction caused by climate change.

Domestically and abroad, we must position justice and equality at the core of our response to the greatest challenge of our lifetime. We must invest resources to build a safe infrastructure for at-risk areas and create millions of living-wage jobs for communities that are disproportionately affected by climate change.
Please consider contributing to my campaign if you care as much as I do about making climate change a federal priority.

We may not be able to prevent future storms, but together we can ensure recovery is as quick and equitable as possible.
Best,
Lindsey
