The Kincade fire burns during the night east of Hwy 128 during a time exposure near Sonoma County on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 in Kellogg
What Can I Do to Help?
We're incredibly saddened by the impact of the Sonoma County Kincade fire, especially because Sonoma County residents are being hit with another devastating wildfire so soon after the Oct. 2017 wildfires.
Democrats throughout El Dorado County have reached out and asked what can be done to help those affected?
Josh Elder, our EDC Democratic Party Chair, reached out and asked Joy Sterling, Chair of the CDP Rural Caucus, a Sonoma County resident, and our keynote speaker at the May 5, 2019 EDC Kennedy Roosevelt Dinner. Joy responded via email message:
"I recommend contributing to the Redwood Empire Food Bank, providing critical food to evacuation centers and shelters for our neighbors displaced by fires ... while working to ensure that those who needed food assistance before the fires are still able to access their help. REFB is the largest such organization covering Sonoma County to the Oregon border. https://refb.org/
Looking beyond the immediate need in Sonoma County, Joy added; "Once we catch a break, we will want to press on the following:
I have asked Rusty Hicks (CDP Chair) to help expedite getting the Rules Committee to allow consideration of the Pending Resolution to de-privatize PG&E.
I am encouraged that Senate Pro Tem Toni Atkins has formed a working committee, including Sen. Mike McGuire, to develop legislation re: wildfire mitigation, insurance and energy grid resiliency.
The need is more evident than ever that we should work to network all 78 county fairgrounds in the state to provide public safety grade communications for disaster response and recovery."
EDC Democrats and residents are encouraged to donate to these relief efforts to assist Sonoma County residents. Also, we'll keep you informed about developments on the other longer range responses to these ongoing wildfire threats.
