What We’re Reading
Oversharing. Would you pay $1,000 a month to live in an open bunkbed in communal housing? These people are, all for a taste of the L.A. dream. Looking for a more temporary sharing economy accommodation? Fake hosting scams are on the rise in Airbnb territory. Speaking of real estate, the depths of WeWork's dysfunction are still being revealed.

A Scam Born Every Minute. Proponents of black salve, a skin-eating folk remedy, say it cures cancer. Doctors say otherwise, but a thriving social media community is dodging regulators. Health care practioners have another scam to be furious about: Virginity testing, which is not a real thing, is alive and well in the U.S. A scam of a different stripe preys on students desperate to jumpstart careers, with an "executive juris doctorate" degree implying a future in law with credentials that aren't accepted by state bars.

From the Ashes. A Walmart parking lot has once again become a makeshift home for wildfire evacuees. They are the latest wave of people to flee home with little more than the clothes on their back, like this family from Paradise did last year. Not all fires are wildfires: In Oakland, a series of mysterious fires are making it harder for low-income residents to stay in the city they call home.

A Corridor Runs Through It
tract housing in florida

The Everglades are a unique natural treasure, and they're slowly being eaten by sprawl as Florida loses 12 acres per hour to development. One photographer took a journey through vanishing wilds with conservationists to learn about what the state is losing, and how it could be saved before it's too late.
