Our London Group at 'Lungs' play and VegFest

Thanks to our hardworking London Local Group, who were very busy raising
awareness this month! The team handed out our small family flyers at the
Old Vic Theatre while 'Lungs' was on - a play that deals with the
environmental impact of having kids. They also spent two days collecting
signatures for our SDGs petition [3] at VegFest UK.

High population density hurts child health, study finds

A continent-wide analysis of the health of kids under five in Africa found
that high population density and environmental degradation are among the
factors with the strongest negative effect on child health.

Newsweek opinion piece calls for smaller families

This great article by Michael Shank in Newsweek promotes smaller families
to protect the environment and ensure children get a good start and a
bright future.

ENVIRONMENT

Could organic farming be worse for the climate?

A new study shows that converting all farmland in England and Wales to
organic agriculture could increase greenhouse gas emissions because meeting
the food demands of the UK population would require using more land abroad.
To make the necessary global switch to less destructive agriculture, we
must achieve sustainable diets and population sizes.

UK biodversity report: more of us, less of them

The latest edition of the most authoritative report on biodiversity in the
UK was released this month - _State of Nature 2019_. The 2016 version
described the UK as "one of the most nature-depleted countries in the
world". This new edition makes clear there has been no improvement - and
shows some of the impacts of human population growth.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS & SEXUAL HEALTH

Four in five women live in countries rated ‘poor’ or ‘very
poor’ for gender equality

A major new report on the state of gender equality in 129 countries by
Equal Measures 2030 reveals that women and girls continue to be
discriminated against across the globe, with four out of five women living
in the lowest scoring countries.

Scientists call for improving contraceptive use to fight climate change


A welcome new commentary article published in _BMJ Sexual & Reproductive
Health_ urges wide-scale adoption of policies that increase the use of
modern contraception as part of global efforts to reduce climate emissions.
