It’s simple: Writing letters works. When Amnesty mobilizes people — passionate human rights supporters like you — to write letters (yes, with a pen and paper, envelope and stamp!), we can change lives.
Every year, around December 10th (International Human Rights Day), Amnesty supporters change lives doing this simple act with Write for Rights, the world’s biggest event for human rights. Sign up now to join Write for Rights this year >>
This year’s Write for Rights campaign is unique because we’re focusing on young people who are taking on some of the world’s biggest crises.
One of the 10 global cases is right here in Canada, of Indigenous youth from Asubpeeschoseewagong (Grassy Narrows) First Nation who are fighting for justice in the face of 50 years of mercury poisoning in their community.
Last year we sent more than 5.9 million letters, petitions, tweets and solidarity messages from around the world in support of women human rights defenders. In Canada, thousands of people took part in schools, cafes, homes and concert halls.
Activists who have received our messages tell us that the letters gave them hope to keep fighting for human rights. Geraldine Chacon, an activist, Amnesty member and Write for Rights 2018 case who was detained for her work in Venezuela, said: “I’ve campaigned for Write for Rights cases before. I never imagined I’d be on the other side of the campaign. I have no words to thank all that Amnesty has done for me.”
Join us to take action in support of this year's cases, brave young people like:
December 10th is the day when Amnesty's collective voice is heard around the world. Thank you for helping us get even louder this year for young people on the frontlines of human rights by joining Write for Rights.
Yours sincerely,
Alex Neve Secretary General Amnesty International Canada
