Friend,

Tomorrow is the first day of December, meaning the coldest days of the year are just around the corner. And I have to be honest with you, Friend: I’m scared. Last February, Texans witnessed firsthand just how catastrophic a few really cold days can be when our energy grid isn’t prepared. And despite the outcry from millions of Texans, an ERCOT report from earlier this month revealed that our grid is still extremely vulnerable.

All year long we’ve begged Republican lawmakers to take the steps necessary to make sure we don’t experience another devastating blackout. But instead they gave energy companies dangerous loopholes so they can avoid the crucial weatherization measures that could be lifesaving for Texans.

Governor Abbott has claimed that everything that needed to be done was done to fix the power grid. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. In reality, the Texas Legislature passed weatherization guidance that gave energy companies a $150 opt-out to be able to sell out Texans.

On top of that, state regulators -- who are appointed by Republicans -- give us barely any information about what’s really going on. So it’s impossible to know how many power and gas facilities are actually weatherized -- leaving Texans with no assurance that they’ll have power if there’s another major freeze this winter.

Friend, this is unacceptable. Texans deserve more from our leaders. We deserve to feel like our safety is the number one priority -- not profits for big energy execs. The only way to ensure that our grid gets the overhaul it needs is for Democrats to be the ones calling the shots. We have less than a year to elect Democrats to all levels of power in our state, and we can’t do it without you. Friend, will you rush $7 before our critical end-of-month fundraising deadline to elect leaders that will make the changes Texans are begging for?

Friend, I wish we could count on Republican lawmakers to protect us from another winter storm -- but we can’t. So I encourage everyone to get prepared just in case we face another blackout this winter.

Make two plans. First, make a plan with your family to stay safe in the next storm. Then, make a plan for how you’re going to make a difference in our fight to defeat Greg Abbott in the midterms. Come next November, we’ll show Texas Republicans that we won’t tolerate their failed leadership any longer.

In service and hope,
