MAGGIE’S LIST CANDIDATE WINSOME SEARS VICTORIOUS IN VIRGINIA LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR ELECTION

Washington, D.C. — Maggie’s List, a federal political action committee (PAC) dedicated to electing fiscally conservative women to federal office and statewide executive office, congratulates Winsome Sears on a victorious election for Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor.

On Tuesday, Winsome made history by being the Commonwealth's first female lieutenant governor, and the first woman of color to hold a statewide office. Winsome fought a tough race against Democratic opponent Hala Ayala. Sears was first endorsed by Maggie’s List in June 2021.

“I am proud to congratulate Winsome Sears on her election to Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Maggie’s List Virginia Co-Chair Tina Ramirez. “Winsome’s message of fiscal responsibility, empowering families to choose the education best for their children and individual liberty clearly resonated with voters and we are thrilled for her to become the first female lieutenant governor in Virginia’s history. Her wealth of experience in the public and private sectors has prepared her well to assume office and we look forward to her forthcoming accomplishments as lieutenant governor.”

Previously, Winsome was elected to a majority Black legislative district, an achievement that no other Republican has accomplished in Virginia since 1865. She consequently also became the first (and still only) Black Republican woman elected to the Virginia House, the first female veteran, and the first legal immigrant woman.

Winsome is a mother, wife and is proud to have served in the United States Marines. She was also a hard-charging Vice President of the Virginia State Board of Education and received presidential appointments to the US Census Bureau (where she co-chaired the African American Committee) and the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Maggie’s List empowers conservative women candidates with political credibility and national notoriety. Maggie’s List has an established reputation for backing promising candidates with a mix of maximum financial contributions, an established national network and rapid response grassroots efforts.
Endorsed Winning Candidate Spotlight: Rep. Ashley Hinson, IA-01
Rep. Ashley Hinson, IA-01

Congresswoman Ashley Hinson proudly represents Northeast Iowa in Congress. Ashley announced that she will be running for re-election to Iowa’s new 2nd Congressional District in 2022 to continue serving Northeast Iowans and be their voice in Washington.

During her years as a reporter, Ashley shared the stories of countless Iowans on the local news. As their Congresswoman, she is bringing those stories to Washington to help shape federal policy and improve the lives of workers, farmers, seniors, veterans, and families in Iowa.

An Iowa native, Ashley is an award-winning journalist and a proud wife and mother of two. Ashley previously served in the Iowa state House and represented Iowa’s 67th House district, serving Hiawatha, Robins, Cedar Rapids, and Marion, where she currently resides. As a state Representative, she worked successfully to balance the budget, cut taxes, and protect the most vulnerable in her community.

In Congress, she continues to be a common-sense leader and pursue pro-growth policies. She has introduced and supported bipartisan legislation to improve child care access for working families in Iowa, root out corruption in Washington through federal lobbying bans, and create opportunities for workers in the community. She is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and House Budget Committee, where she oversees the government funding process and fights to ensure every taxpayer dollar is accounted for and spent responsibly. As a mother of two, she also has a keen interest in protecting the safety and security of Iowa families.

Prior to serving Iowans in public office, Ashley was a reporter for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids. For more than a decade, she had the opportunity to connect with Iowa’s small business owners and community leaders. Ashley’s extensive reporting on rising healthcare costs, devastating flooding, and other critical issues impacting Eastern Iowa drove her to seek opportunities to better serve her community and take action to solve the problems she had covered for years.

While working as a reporter, Ashley earned recognition as a two-time Midwest regional Emmy award winner, an RTDNA Health Reporting Fellow, and a Waypoint Tribute to Women Honoree. She received her B.A. in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Southern California before returning home to Iowa to work and raise a family.

Ashley and her husband Matt are raising their two sons in Marion. Her children motivate her every day to fight for a better community and a stronger economy for all Iowa families. Ashley is also an active member of her community, regularly playing violin at Antioch Christian Church and volunteering with local charities.

Endorsed Winning Candidate Spotlight:
Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, IA-02
Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, IA-02

Mariannette’s father was a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force who was forced to take up extra work, sometimes two or three jobs, to support their family. Her mother, who did not have a high school education, also worked multiple jobs.

Mariannette originally dreamed of becoming a teacher because she loved school and wanted to share her passion for learning with others. However, in 10th grade, she was severely burned in a kitchen fire. While at the hospital, Mariannette was treated by a physical therapist who went out of her way to make sure she got better. This woman’s kindness and selflessness inspired her to become a doctor so she could help others.

Mariannette was the fourth of eight children and since her parents did not have the means to pay for college, she left home at 16 and enrolled in community college. She later enlisted in the United States Army at 18, where she served for 24 years as a private, nurse, and doctor (ophthalmologist or eye diseases/surgery.) She went into private practice in Ottumwa in 1997 and she has remained there with her husband, Curt.

Mariannette has two grown children, Jonathon and Taylor. In 2010, Governor Terry Branstad appointed her as the Director of the Iowa Department of Public Health where she served until 2014.

In 2018, the voters of Senate District 41 elected Mariannette to fight for them in the Iowa State Senate. She resigned from the state senate on January 2, 2021 to take her seat in the United States House of Representatives.

Congressional Partner Spotlight:
Senator Rick Scott, Florida
Sen. Rick Scott, Florida
Rick Scott spent each day as Florida’s 45th governor working to turn around Florida’s economy and secure the state’s future as the best place for families and businesses to succeed. He grew up in public housing in the Midwest as his adoptive father, a World War II veteran and truck driver, and his mother, a store clerk, struggled to support their family financially. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Ann, Rick Scott joined the Navy and used the G.I. Bill to go to college and eventually open his first business – a donut shop so his mom could have a job. He ultimately ran the world’s largest healthcare company, with hundreds of thousands of employees from across the globe.

Rick Scott knows firsthand that a good paying job is one of the most important things for a family, and following Florida’s economic collapse ten years ago, he decided to run for governor as a businessman with no political experience. While Governor, Rick Scott successfully championed more than $10 billion in tax cuts and reduced more than 5,200 burdensome regulations, allowing Florida businesses to create nearly 1.5 million new jobs and helping the unemployment rate drop to one of the historic lows, even lower than the national unemployment level. Under Rick Scott’s watch, significant investments were made into our education system, transportation infrastructure, and the environment – all while paying $9 billion in state debt. He also helped navigate Florida through some of the state’s most challenging times in recent history, including Hurricanes Hermine, Matthew, and Irma, as the state reached a 46-year crime low and maintained record tourism. As governor, Rick fought tirelessly for
Florida families and job creators, and now, he is working to bring that fight to D.C. to secure Florida’s success for generations to come.
