John,
Yesterday we reached out about some of what we accomplished in 2021, and today we're reaching out about what we hope to accomplish in the coming year.
But before we do, I want to remind you that we have an end-of-month deadline coming up at midnight that we need your support to reach.
If you're able, please consider helping us fill the $2790 gap in our budget with a contribution of any amount.
As oral arguments begin in the Supreme Court tomorrow that may overturn Roe v. Wade, we have to double down on our work — here’s what we’re planning in 2022:
We believe that Roe v. Wade is likely to be overturned within the next year. That means that 12 states will immediately outlaw abortion since they have “trigger bans” (a law that says the moment that Roe is overturned, abortion is banned in their state.) And an additional 9 states outlawed abortion before Roe, and those bans are still on the books.
We need prochoice elected officials like sheriffs, judges, local criminal legal officers, and state legislators in these areas to fight back. For example, a district attorney could decide not to prosecute people seeking an abortion, or a doctor performing one.
And in states like Georgia and Ohio that don't have trigger bans but could easily outlaw abortion if given the chance, we need every prochoice voter to turn out to stop attacks on reproductive freedom from escalating.
#VOTEPROCHOICE is determining our 2022 priority areas by considering key factors like average distance to clinics; if there’s a mandated waiting period (so patients need to make more than one trip!); can Medicaid, public, and private insurance cover abortion care; are there abortion-related ballot initiatives; how many reproductive restrictions has the state legislature passed in recent years, and more.
We've been sounding the alarm, and for good reason. 2022 will be our biggest year yet, and we need your support to continue our work electing prochoice champions across the country.
Thank you so much for your support, we can't do this work without you!
Maris Nyhart

P.S. Look out for a longer-form update about our methodology when we’ve finalized our 2022 state plans.
