Hey there --

We’ve been busy this past month making Facebook’s harms known to the world and fighting to level the playing field for small businesses struggling to compete with Big Tech monopolies. I’m so proud and grateful of all the hard work our small but mighty team of now 8 (!!) staffers are accomplishing.

We couldn’t have gotten here without your support. Here’s a recap of the past month:

  • Following additional reporting made possible by Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, we launched FacebookPapers.com as a public resource to catalog all the articles detailing Facebook’s harms to democracy, global security, and public health. The common thread to it all: individual users, businesses, and even Facebook’s own employees are all fed up with their company’s corporate irresponsibility and recklessness.

  • Because of your calls to Congress, the Senate confirmed Jonathan Kanter to lead the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. Thanks to your support, the Biden administration now has another champion for reining in Big Tech’s monopoly power and societal harms for all, especially minority and marginalized groups.

  • We joined Kairos to host The Facebook Logout, where we and over 50,000 of you all logged out of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for three days. Facebook cares how long we spend on its platforms because 98% of their revenue is derived from ads targeted to users. We’re Facebook’s entire business model, and we showed them that we’re sick and tired of their toxic business model.

  • Finally, we launched the campaign Main Street Against Big Tech to highlight how Big Tech harms small business owners through opaque and deceptive marketing features. For too long, Big Tech companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon have used small business owners as a shield to evade reform and accountability, but we’re putting a stop to it and undermining their false narrative that they’re a lifeline for small business.

We’ve been hard at work fighting for structural reforms to create a healthier internet and information ecosystem. Big Tech has the lobbyists, but we have YOU and the grassroots power to affect change.

Our work depends on people like you. That’s why on this Giving Tuesday, we wanted to lay out for you the work we’ve done in just the past month. Donate now and you can help us do this every month. We have big plans for December and the new year ahead.

Appreciate all your support. Hope you’re having a nice start to the holiday season.

Thanks for being here,

Nicole
