Halloween may be over, but the horror continues!

The Trump Administration is once again trying to cut SNAP by changing rules in the program. This change involves the "Standard Utility Allowance" or SUA, a measure of how the cost of utilities impacts a family budget.

The result: a $4.5 billion cut in SNAP benefits over the next five years!

(More info here)

For the third time this year alone, the administration is trying to change SNAP rules in a way that will take food away from those who are simply trying to make ends meet. Seniors and people with disabilities are the most likely to be harmed. These are all changes Congress considered and chose not to make in the Farm Bill that passed with overwhelming support less than a year ago.

How the proposed rule will harm Pennsylvanians:

  • More than half of PA households who use SNAP to put food on the table - nearly half a million households - will lose an average of $40 per month.

  • Total SNAP benefits received across PA would drop 9.3%- a loss of over $237 million to buy food each year.

This rule would change the SNAP benefits calculation on paper but does not mean families will have any additional money to buy food. The terrifying change will be increased hunger for millions of families.

Each lost dollar of SNAP benefits causes a tremendous ripple effect, including greater demand at food pantries, more significant health and learning challenges, lost revenue - and jobs - at stores in our communities, and more.
