Rakia lives in a remote village in southern Niger with her husband and
2-year-old son. She suffered from the advanced stage of trachoma where
her upper eyelids scratched the surface of her corneas with each
blink. Rakia was in constant pain, and without help, she would end up
blind, like so many others in her village.
"I can feel my lashes picking at my eyes," she said.

Rakia's eyes are bandaged after her surgery is completed. The
bandages were removed the next day and her eyelids healed quickly. The
Carter Center is the world's leading provider of this
sight-saving medical procedure.

Thankfully, a Carter Center-trained medical team was available to
perform a simple 30-minute surgery that stopped the damage and pain.
And Rakia's village received the medicine and preventive
education necessary to halt trachoma entirely.
Freed from the threat of this stigmatizing disease, Rakia's
community has been given a second chance. They've returned to
tending their fields and caring for their families. Their children
have gained hope for a brighter future.
