Here at the Fraser Institute, our motto is "if it matters, we measure it!"

Not much could matter more than the effect a rising senior population will have on provinces that are already stuck in cycles of deficit spending. So, we measured!

From BC through Atlantic Canada, provincial governments across the country are running huge deficits while also expecting to see big increases to health-care spending as their senior populations grow.

If these governments want to avoid even more red ink in the future, they will have to make policy changes and better control spending now.
