Last week I reached out about my plan to revolutionize public education in New York State. The response to the idea was extraordinarily positive.
Is it clear that people overwhelmingly believe universal 3-K and Pre-K in New York State is a great idea? Yes. Do parents want access to free, quality after school programming in New York State? They sure do. Would working families benefit from full-day summer education and enrichment for any child in grades K-12? No doubt about it.
Will it be easy? No.
Can we do it? We must.
But today, I want to talk specifically about one piece of the plan — and I also want to ask you to take action on it as well. This is important.
Sign my petition: tell both Congress and Albany that universal Pre-K should be a permanently-funded right for ALL children regardless of income level as one of the best ways to reduce inequality in our country and in our state.

When I was running for mayor in 2013 talking about making universal pre-K a right for all in New York City, people said it was a noble idea but one that would never happen.
They said it’d be too difficult in a city like ours. They said it’d be too expensive. They said Albany would never go for it.
There will always be a lot of voices telling us what we can’t do — especially when it comes to things that benefit working people and reduce inequality.
But we believed in a a radical but moral notion that every child is precious. And if that is true, we were going to give them opportunity, support them, love them, and uplift them.
And today, 70,000 children in New York City enjoy free full-day pre-K as a universal right.
As you know, Congress is in the middle of a debate about whether or not to make pre-K a right across the country.
Will it pass? I hope so. If it doesn’t then Albany must.
But today, it’s critical legislators in D.C. and Albany hear from those who understand this issue best:
Sign my petition: tell both Congress and Albany that universal Pre-K should be a permanently-funded right for ALL children regardless of income level as one of the best ways to reduce inequality in our country and in our state.

When we say to our leaders, we demand you help us to a better life, it can actually be achieved. But I will guarantee you one thing, if you don’t demand it, you’ll never see it.
In solidarity,
Bill de Blasio
