UAF grantees like Louisiana Bucket Brigade (LBB) and RISE St. James are some of those groups that fill us with hope as we’ve navigated through this year of change. LBB and RISE St.James led the fight to stop the planned construction of Formosa’s 14 plastic plants in the St. James Parish of Louisiana – also known as “Cancer Alley.”
The court sided with LBB, RISE St. James, and its allies, allowing a temporary halt to the construction of the Formosa plastic plants during the pandemic and pending lawsuit. In response, this provided more opportunities for activists to protect impacted communities and local wetlands. It is seeing wins like this that inspire us and show us the emergence of hope that has come out of post-pandemic frontline activism.
