I remember a call from a young man who’d just been in a fight with his parents. They didn’t accept him for being gay. He told me he was planning to kill himself that night with one of the dozens of guns his father kept in their house.

“What’s the point of sticking around,” he asked,
“if even my own parents don’t accept me?”

I told him what I’ve told so many over the years: There may be people who don’t accept you for who you are. But there are many who not only accept you, but celebrate you — and I am one of those people.

We know supportive messages like these can save lives: When an LGBTQ young person has at least one accepting adult in their life, the risk of suicide plummets by 40%.
