"Wage shortage" fuels area driver shortage, says transit union

"I really don't think the problem is the driver shortage. I think that the problem is the wage shortage," ATU 689 president Raymond Jackson [link removed] told the Washington Post
last Friday. He was responding to the Post's reports that nearly two years into the pandemic, "transit systems battling a decline in passengers and fare revenue in the Washington region are facing another hurdle: a bus driver shortage that threatens their ability to resume normal operations." Local 689 represents workers at Metrobus, D.C. Circulator, Fairfax Connector, Alexandria's DASH, Loudoun County Transit and MetroAccess. Jackson said compensation for transit positions at some local systems is not competitive enough in an economic environment where people with commercial licenses are in high demand. "Blue-collar workers in this country have had enough and that's what we are seeing. We just want fair wages and fair benefits. That's all we're asking for."


Bessemer Amazon workers get new union vote

Workers at Amazon in Bessemer, Alabama are getting a new union election. The NLRB yesterday formally ordered a re-run, upholding charges by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) that Amazon had acted blatantly illegally during the vote earlier this year. "Today's decision confirms what we were saying all along," said RWDSU president Stuart Appelbaum, "that Amazon's intimidation and interference prevented workers from having a fair say in whether they wanted a union in their workplace." The NLRB cited Amazon's "flagrant disregard" for an agency procedure to make union elections free and fair, saying the company "essentially highjacked the process and gave a strong impression that it controlled the process." Workers rejected the union by a 2-1 margin. A date for the re-run has not yet been set.

Kellogg's strike update
Today is Day 56 of the BCTGM strike against Kellogg's, and while negotiations are set to possibly resume the first week of December, it's clear that Kellogg's is pulling out all the stops -- including [link removed] threatening to hire permanent workers to replace the strikers. Kellogg's workers are on strike against its exploitive two-tier employment system that does not offer temporary workers a path to become permanent workers with better benefits and pay, among other issues.
