The Broward Democratic Party is saddened at the news of Former U.S. Congresswoman, Carrie Meek's passing. Congresswoman Meek was a trailblazer for African Americans in public service and in the community.

Her public service began in 1978 as Member of the Florida House of Representatives, District 17. She went on to become a Member of the Florida Senate. In 1992, she was elected to the United States House of Representatives becoming one of the first African-American lawmakers to represent Florida in Congress since Reconstruction.

Congresswoman Meek fought many battles on behalf of the Haitian community She took on the plight of the refugees and was instrumental in the passage of many immigration bills that provided relief to immigrants. Furthermore, Congresswoman Meek championed and brought many positive changes in her District, in the areas of economic development i.e. the Enterprise Zone, education, child care and family empowerment.

After retiring from Congress, she was succeeded in 2000 by her son, Kendrick Meek. In 2001, following her retirement, The Carrie Meek Foundation was established, honoring Congresswoman Meek's work through grants, civic engagement, and community empowerment. Her pioneering spirit will be missed, but her legacy will endure forever.
