Hello, it’s Isra, Ilhan’s daughter. You've probably seen all the headlines — a far-right Member of Congress is smearing my mom's name again with Islamophobic, hateful tropes.
That kind of hate is why, when my mom first ran for office, some people misguidedly advised her not to wear her hijab if she wanted to win — missing the point that Islamophobia, not my mom's personal decision, is the problem that needs to be fixed.
There’s something to be said for the number of people who gave her that advice, but there’s also something to be said for the number of people who celebrated her just as she was and sent her to Congress:
Every single person who supported her candidacy made it possible — and so many have joined our movement since then.
A lot of people — like young, hijabi women who’d never seen a representative who looked and worshipped like them — dreamed of the day this would happen. Your support, from the donations you’ve made to the doors you’ve knocked, is what has made this all possible.
It’s thanks to you that we sent one of the first Muslim women to Congress to fight for a more just, equitable world for all — from Medicare for All to an end to forever wars.
And you have shown that in America, we don't just tolerate religious differences — we celebrate them, too.
We are grateful, but right now, it’s more important than ever that you stand with us. Will you send a donation of any amount to show your support?
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
Thank you. Any hatred we see is no match for the love and unity this movement has shown time and time again.
