Here’s your updates for this week. Hey Indivisibles,
Hopefully you had a refreshing weekend, because we have a busy week ahead of us! First of all, let’s talk about reconciliation. As we are sure you remember, the House of Representatives stuck to their promises and passed Biden’s full Build Back Better agenda (BBB). Now the bill has made its way to the Senate, where we expect senators to come to an official vote as soon as possible. Biden’s full Build Back Better Agenda will make badly needed public investments across the economy, so we need to keep pushing for a vote to get past the last few hurdles (including pushback from our usuals: Sens. Manchin and Sinema).
Now for democracy: There was a failed procedural vote on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act on November 3. Senator Schumer has sent out another “Dear Colleague” letter to his fellow senators. In this letter, Schumer states that even if he cannot get enough GOP support behind the John Lewis Advancement Act, Senate Democrats are not going to stop fighting to “restore our democracy” -- even if they have to go at it alone. Indivisibles who live in Republican states have gotten together to write Senator Schumer and other Senate Democrats a letter of their own -- reminding them how important it is to our democracy that the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is passed. It’s on us to keep pushing for Democrats to fix the filibuster and pass this massively popular bill.
Lastly, Giving Tuesday is tomorrow! With the help of Indivisibles like you, we have fought for an inclusive recovery that meets the moment, we have fought for democracy reform, the reproductive rights of people, and so much more, and it’s all possible because of grassroots donors. Giving Tuesday is our chance to come together to fund this movement for the many fights to come: Chip in today to help us reach our Giving Tuesday goal and start 2022 strong.
With that, here are your weekly to-dos:
Your Weekly To-Dos
- Call your senator and demand they pass BBB as quickly as possible! The House just passed the Build Back Better Act (BBB) and now it is on its way to the Senate. Now it is time for the Senate to do its job and pass BBB this week. With just a few days left before recess, it is urgent that you call your senator and tell them how important it is that we pass an inclusive recovery bill that works for everyone ASAP.
- Call your Senator and demand they fix the filibuster and move quickly to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. Senate Democrats have released a new version of their democracy reform bill called the Freedom to Vote Act. Senator Schumer along with other Democratic Senators have agreed to move forward with democracy reform, even without Republican support for the bill. Call your Senators and let them know you stand with Sen. Schumer, and you want them to adjust the filibuster now to pass the Freedom to Vote Act before they leave town for the holidays.
- Make a $10 donation to Indivisible this Giving Tuesday. With all eyes on the Senate for the Build Back Better and democracy reform votes, we’re hard at work building resources, call scripts, and more, and spending a lot of money to do it. To be honest, we’ve fallen a little behind our fundraising goal this month -- chip in today to help us close the gap before the month is up.
