Criminal enforcement of HIV continues to impact people living with HIV/AIDS. HIV criminal laws disproportionately harm people of color, women, LGBT people, and sex workers—precisely the communities HIV-prevention initiatives aim to reach.

This World AIDS Day, the Williams Institute and the African American Policy Forum will gather leading thinkers and advocates from the international HIV/AIDS community to discuss 40 years of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and strategies to approach HIV as a public health issue rather than a crime.

** More than 490,000 LGBT people in Pennsylvania are vulnerable to discrimination

Pennsylvania ranks 24th in social acceptance of LGBT people. The state's legal landscape puts the 416,000 LGBT adults and 74,000 LGBT youth who live in Pennsylvania at risk of discrimination and harassment. For example, nearly half (47%) LGBT employees living in Pennsylvania have experienced unfair treatment at work at some point in their lives. The social, economic, and health effects of stigma and discrimination against LGBT people negatively impact Pennsylvania’s economy by tens of millions of dollars each year.
