For too long, we’ve allowed groups on the right to dominate the debate, speak for our community and claim the banner of “pro-Israel.” Groups which seek to whitewash and distract from the appalling effect that settlements, demolitions and endless occupation are having on Palestinian families -- and the corrosive effect it’s having on Israel’s future.
I want us to inject common sense, nuance and compassion into this debate. And honestly, I want to ensure that right-wing groups who’ve aligned with Trump and Netanyahu in recent years are treated with the distrust and skepticism they’ve earned when they claim to represent our values in Washington, DC.

The debate around Israel in our community is a real cause for concern. Too many of our institutions have become focused on a “with us or against us” narrative at the expense of the values that make our community strong -- the values of critical thought, nuance, compassion, equality, solidarity and justice.
I’m tired of political games that pit people against each other, shout down those of us seeking to add balance and understanding to the debate, and slander critics of the Israeli right’s destructive policies as “anti-Israel” or “bad Jews.”
Together, we can reclaim and redefine what it means to be pro-Israel in Washington, DC. We can show that caring for Israel's future does not mean unquestioning support for the policies of the Israeli right. We can make clear that together, we stand shoulder to shoulder with Israeli progressives fighting for a more just and equal future.
And together, we can make clear that a system built on discrimination, demolitions and evictions -- and that sends young Israelis to guard wrecking crews and illegal settlements -- ultimately serves neither Israelis nor Palestinians, and only serves to advance the destructive, ethno-nationalist fantasies of the Israeli right.
