No one should have to choose between caring for their family and getting a paycheck. That’s why countries around the world require employers to pay their workers while they take time off to care for a sick relative or have a baby. On average, other countries require employers to provide 29 weeks of paid maternity leave – but in the United States, we require zero.

In fact, we’re the only industrialized country that does not require employers to provide any paid family leave for parents – but Congress is considering a policy that would finally change that.

Only 19% of workers in the U.S. have access to paid family leave through their employers. That means the vast majority of parents are forced to go without pay while they care for their newborn children, and many workers are losing out on weeks of pay while they’re pregnant.

Plus, our country’s nonexistent family leave policies have taken a toll on women during the pandemic. About 3 million women have left the workforce since the start of the pandemic, in part because mothers haven’t had the option to take paid family leave and have struggled to find affordable child care.

This isn’t just bad for American women and families, it’s bad for our economy. That’s 3 million people who were siphoned out of economic participation because of our intentional policy choices.

Passing a paid family leave policy would be a huge step toward gender and racial equity. It would help close the wage gap for moms, which is especially bad for Black mothers, who are paid 52 cents for every dollar white fathers make, and it would allow women to get back to work, which would strengthen our economy.

Paid family leave is a no-brainer – but Congress nearly took this policy out of the Build Back Better Act during negotiations, so we need your help to get it across the finish line. Please, use your voice now to advocate for working families across the U.S.:
