Home Depot is developing a website and loyalty app for its pro contractor customers -- a market also being chased by Ace Hardware, retailers and manufacturers. Distributors still hold 72% of contractor spend but are the exclusive sellers to less than 20% of such customers, a Channel Marketing Group survey states.
Distributors may not need or be able to offer the same shipping options as Amazon, depending on which products they sell, says Colin Cronin of Leica Biosystems. Paradigm B2B CEO Andy Hoar adds that timing often matters more than shipping cost.

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in Southern California remain under pressure because of a shortage of berths for incoming ships, warehouse space, port workers and truck drivers. "Ships are unloading much more slowly than usual because the containers that are hoisted onto the docks aren't moving inland fast enough, instead sitting on port property for weeks as warehouses and container yards across the region overflow," this Bloomberg analysis states.
Distributors can mitigate the financial impact of supply chain disruptions by encouraging their suppliers "to have more localized, regionalized manufacturing," says Helgi Leja, senior director at Distribution Performance Solutions. Better communication up and down the supply chain also is critical, Leja says.

Approximately 75% of consumers polled in 11 countries by media agency Essence say they will likely buy products via social media, while 80% say livestreaming or other "conversational commerce" will boost their intent to make purchases. "E-commerce is maturing as a field, with social media giving brands and retailers new ways to reach audiences and new growth opportunities," says Aniket Basu, Essence's senior director, technology and e-commerce.
