The Tongass National Forest is home to some of the last remaining stands of temperate old-growth rainforest in the world and serves as a hub for tourism, fishing, and outdoor recreation in Southeast Alaska. It is also America's largest forest storehouse of carbon. The Sierra Club and our partners have been pushing for reinstating the Roadless Rule on the Tongass and have worked hard to defend it over the last 20 years — with the White House, in the courts, and in Congress. And, on November 18th, the Biden administration started the official process to restore environmental protections to the Tongass National Forest, reversing a Trump-era attack that would have put Alaska's last old-growth forest — which is home to 800-year-old trees and an awe-inspiring array of wildlife
— at risk of logging and road-building.
